Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood S01

Two brothers lose their mother to an incurable disease. They use the science of alchemy, a forbidden knowledge, to try to bring her back. However, their attempt fails and as a punishment for using this type of alchemy, the older brother, Edward Elric, loses his left leg and the younger brother, Alphonse Elric, loses his entire body. Edward sacrifices his right arm to save his brother and is able to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armor, and with the help of a family friend, he receives automail, prosthetic limbs, to replace his lost ones. He then swears to search for the Philosopher's Stone to restore their bodies, even if it means becoming a "State Alchemist", someone who uses alchemy for the military.
